Kanin Wren
“WREN”

What Stands Out: 19-year-old Michigan native Kanin Wren steps into a polished pop sound on her debut full-length album. Wren channels inspiration from some of today’s biggest pop stars suc as Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift, and even includes a cover of Carpenter’s “Lie To Girls.” After many fans got to know her through the Taylor Swift Experience tribute show, Kanin Wren is introducing her audience to a set of songs that reflect more of her personal experiences and a refined sound that mirrors the music that Wren herself is a fan of. “WREN” is characterized by groovy basslines, orchestral elements, and a few ballad-style tracks that are reminiscent of Wren’s previous releases.
Digging Deeper: Kanin Wren, who has focused heavily on building a relationship with her dedicated fans, decided to forgo the typical album-release blueprint and drop this album with very little promotion or lead-up. In a statement on social media Wren wrote, “When people discover me, I want them to hear my latest chapter.” Even with the sparkling, polished pop sheen of this new batch of songs, Wren’s music does not sacrifice any of its authenticity and candid storytelling. While covering topics of heartbreak, new love and learning lessons through mistakes, Wren captures the experience of being a teenager in a way that is sure to resonate with Wren’s younger fans.

Young “Swifties” dressed in glitter filled The Croswell Theatre in Adrian on Friday, Feb. 13, dancing and singing along during a high-energy Taylor Swift Experience concert starring 19-year-old Kanin Wren.

What do you do when you are asked to review a Taylor Swift Experience concert, knowing you cannot hum a single note of a “Swiftie” song. I requested a set list for the concert. And I recruited. I asked 12-year-old Alayna Brazzil, from Holland, Ohio for help.

She took the set list, circled Swift’s most popular songs and marked her favorites. Check.

From the moment I took my seat, the front of the stage was swarmed with little girls, dressed in glitter, wearing glowing halos, talking, giggling and running up and down the aisles. I was, once again, seated in the “party bus” section of The Croswell, entirely surrounded by Swifties.

Brinlee Way opened the evening playing her guitar while singing five songs. Way opened with “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus, then “Birds of a Feather,” “As It Was,” “Espresso” and closing with “Just A Man.”

Kanin Wren is set to release her self-titled album WREN in 2025, promising a rich showcase of her growth as an artist. From her humble origins of performing with patients in hospitals to taking on the world stage, Kanin is ready to positively impact the music industry and the fans she interacts so heavily with.

Early Musical Roots

Kanin’s musical journey started at a young age. She performed for patients in a local hospital at just ten years old. Armed with only a “boom box” and a repertoire of five songs, she would walk from room to room, listening to patients share their stories before serenading them with her warm, soulful voice.

Amid the challenges of being a high school freshman during the tumultuous times of the pandemic, Kanin embarked on a transformative journey by enrolling in songwriting classes.

Beginning to perform in a venue such as a hospital at a young age molded the warm, heartfelt approach that defined Kanin’s connections to music and audience engagement.

Education and Music

As Kanin entered her second year of touring, she received news of her acceptance to the University of Michigan. The university granted her a Gap year to focus on her music before pursuing her studies, further inspiring her musical efforts.

Tribute Band Success

Kanin’s musical career took a surprising turn during her junior year in high school when consultation with Elle Lively sparked a big epiphany. Elle compared Kanin to a young Taylor Swift, igniting the idea of starting a Taylor Swift Tribute band. Read the entire article
